Yoga for the Season - Warming and Energizing the Body During this Transition into Cold Weather

As we transition into autumn, the body tends to contract. Windows close and the body receives less fresh clean air. The sunlight fades and some can get a little sad and lethargic. Yoga can help make this an easier transition for the body.

Exhilarating Pranayama...

  • Kipalabhati raises the energy and warms the body
  • Bhastrika breath brings in fresh oxygen and clears the lungs of toxins & allergens, while also raising the energy.
  • Lion's Breath is warming and releases anger that can build up when the body accumulates toxins.

Asanas...

  • Sun Salutations are great for warming the body, getting oxygen in and releasing toxins. Vinyasa and Ashtanga flows can add variety to your sun salutation series.
  • Poses like Warrior, Goddess, Chair Pose and Eagle Pose are all poses that create heat and strength.
  • As the sun light fades and we move indoors, instead of slipping into less exercise, the poses I have recommended will not only keep you warm, but also, keep you in shape and feeling energized.
  • Spinal rocking is also wonderful for alleviating depression that may occur because of the decrease in sunlight, exercise and fresh air.
  • Other playful poses that will help to keep spirits up include Snow Ball and rocking from side to side in Happy Baby pose.

Please practice all of these more strenuous poses with sufficient warm up and cool down poses. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult your yoga instructor or yoga therapist.

Lifestyle...

Also, continue to exercise outdoors as much as possible to take in fresh air, sunlight and sweat out toxins. Visit with friends, to keep your spirits up, practicing yogic lifestyle, as you do so. In addition, saunas, hot baths, drinking hot tea and adding warming spices to your food will help to keep you warm during this shift into cooler weather.

Share a weekend with your peers while deepening your yoga instruction and private practice with Therapeutic Yoga. Expand your awareness of what the body is asking for from the yoga, so you can focus your classes toward individual needs. Review and enhance your awareness of the metaphysical benefits and contraindications of poses. Practice modifications for illness and injuries using props, gentle and restorative poses. This workshop will expand your sensitivity to the needs of your students and your skills to provide private sessions. Assist your students with their healing and watch your clientele grow.

Tips for Abundance - Gratitude

During this time when many are tightening their belts in anticipation for upcoming heating bills and the holidays, it is a good time to practice gratitude for all we already have. I find that when I do this, all the wants and desires, all the feelings of lack, disappear.

When we get so many messages from the media to have this and that, we can easily get sad because we do not have what they have. When these thoughts begin to penetrate the psyche, instead look around and find things you are grateful for... the roof over your head, the food on your table, your partner, your family, your friends, the love you receive from your pet, the beauty of the changing leaves. Soon you will realize the wealth that you have that is not a "thing", but something SO much richer. Experience the bliss and contentment that this brings.
